At least 13 individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
